  • Introduction

"Living in solitude now and then, repeating God’s name and singing His glories, and discriminating between the Real and the unreal -these are the means to employ to realize God." -Sri Ramakrishna-

"If you practise spiritual discipline for some time in a solitary place you will find that your mind has become strong, and then you can live in any place or society without being in the least affected by it." -Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi-

The Ashrama in Bindweide is situated in a peaceful countryside. It is approachable by road in about one and a half hours from Frankfurt and Cologne. The nearest railway station 'Betzdorf (Sieg)' is about 9 kilometres away from the house on the Siegen-Cologne railway line. It has accommodation for people who want to spend good time in the spiritual company of noble minds. The retreats held here are meant for providing congenial atmosphere as far as possible to people belonging to any religion, gender, colour or nationality in order to get back to their own eternal values and self-worth. After attending a retreat people may find themselves returning home loving their own self more.

  • PROGRAMMES FOR 2017 IN BINDWEIDE

  • Retreat in August (10 - 13) 2017 in Bindweide with Swami Tyagananda of Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre, Boston, USA.

Focus: Knowing the Knower—the Path of Knowledge.
(As usual, the discourses will be translated sentence-for-sentence into German.
Kindly enrol yourself well in advance so as to help us arrange for your accommodation in or near the Ashrama.)
According to the philosophy of the Upanishads, Atman, the very stuff of consciousness, is the knowing subject in us. There is not and can never be for us a reality outside Atman – a universe outside consciousness. This Atman is unknowable, because It is the all-inclusive Unity. All relative knowledge presupposes a duality of subject and object. In the realm of duality – which from the highest standpoint does not exist – one sees another and knows another. The individual atman is in reality the Supreme Atman; and in proportion as we rise to this knowledge, the illusion of the object vanishes, until in the end the knowing Subject alone remains. This Subject, which is the knower of knowing, remains unknowable, because one cannot see the seer of seeing or know the knower of knowing. When – as in deep sleep or profound samadhi – the Atman apparently does not see, nevertheless It is seeing, since for the Seer, who is imperishable, there is no cessation of seeing. There exists, however, no second thing besides this Seer, nothing distinct from It for It to see.
The most complete and rational exposition of this doctrine of the Atman’s persistence without change through the states of waking, dreaming, deep sleep, death, rebirth, and final Liberation is given in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, whose contribution to the philosophy of Atman (the Reality behind the individual) and Brahman (the Reality behind the universe) is the essence of Advaita Vedanta.
Swami Tyagananda of Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre, Boston, USA, and a well-known writer and speaker, will conduct a four-day interactive retreat on the above subject.

  • Retreat in September (8 - 10) 2017 in Bindweide with Swami Baneshananda and Swami Bhaswatananda.

Topic: One's Own Liberation and the Welfare of the World.
(As usual, the discourses will be translated sentence-for-sentence into German.
Kindly enrol yourself well in advance so as to help us arrange for your accommodation in or near the Ashrama.)
Sri Ramakrishna once observed that the three salient disciplines of Vaishnavism were love of God’s name, service to the devotees, and compassion for all living beings. But he did not like the word compassion and said to the devotees: ‘How foolish to speak of compassion! Man is an insignificant worm crawling on the earth – and he to show compassion to others! This is absurd. It must not be compassion, but service to all. Recognize them as God’s manifestations and serve them.’
Swami Vivekananda understood the implications and significance of this teaching, which wonderfully reconciled non-dualism with its discipline of non-attachment and dualism with its discipline of love. The two were not really in conflict. A non-dualist did not have to make his heart dry as sand, nor did he have to run away from the world. If Brahman alone existed in all, one must love all and serve all. Love, in the true sense of the word, is not possible unless one sees God in others.
Ramakrishna’s words also reconciled the paths of knowledge and action. An illumined person did not have to remain inactive; he could commune with God through service to others, who are also embodiments of God.
Vivekananda resolved that God willing he would proclaim this noble truth before the world at large. Years later, when he formally established the Ramakrishna Mission, he adopted this great dictum, ‘For one’s own salvation, and for the welfare of the world’, as its motto.
Swami Baneshananda and Swami Bhaswatananda of Vedanta-Gesellschaft, Germany, will jointly conduct a three-day interactive retreat on the above subject.
